Thanks for sharing that information Steve and Yvette. This is definitly why I am glad we have this website. There are so many that pass on, that we know, that I never know about until after the fact. My sympathy goes out to the family.

I think it is wonderful to be able to laugh, joke, and have fun on this website, but as adults who are all pushing, if not at age 40 already, we know when it is time to be serious and supportive as well.

Lots of love to you all.

YES WE ALL KNOW THAT IN THE MIST OF THIS GREAT LIFE THERE IS ALSO DEATH. I KNOW THAT EACH AND EVERY ONE OF US HAS COME TO TERMS WITH THAT. JUST AS WE LAUGH, WE IN OUR HEARTS, HAVE NOT FORGOTTEN ANYONE WHO HAS GONE BEFORE US.. THERE IS NOT A DAY THAT GOES BY THAT I DO NOT THINK OF MY FRIENDS WHO HAVE GONE BEFORE ME . TAKING A MOMENT OF SILENCE FOR THEM IS IN ITSELF RESPECTFUL...BUT MORE THAN THAT WHAT KEEPS SOMEONES MEMORY ALIVE IS THE FACT THAT WE LIVE , LAUGH AND SMILE. THERE IS NO GUILT IN THE ACT OF LAUGHTER..

GOD SPEED

I need to look at my yearbook, but if Oliver is the person I am thinking, he was at the game Friday. Definitely sending sympathy and prayers to the family.

I think Steve told me his brother was at the game Katrina.

Speaking of game...Dinwiddie plays at Col Hgts this Friday. I hope you all come and support Dinwiddie. I will be sitting on the Dinwiddie side even though my kids go to Col Hgts. We need to show them how to party!!

Would we like to send a statement to the funeral home to be read at the funeral on behalf of the class of '88 - more or less an expression of sympathy? I don't mind writing one.

Katrina,

If you wouldn’t mind composing some form of expression of sympathy on behalf of The DCSHS Class of '88, that would wonderful!

Here is some more information from the Progress Index for Oliver;

Oliver W. Henderson Sr.

On the evening of Sept. 28, 2008 at 2:24 p.m. at the Southside Regional Medical Center, God called home one of his own, Mr. Oliver W. "Ollie" Henderson Sr. of 11613 Quaker Road, Dinwiddie, Va.

He was the fourth born to Mr. Hawthron and Mrs. Bertha Henderson on June 12, 1968. Oliver was raised and obtained his education in the Dinwiddie County Public School System, graduating class of 1988. At an early age Oliver made Jesus the head of his life and joined the Big Bethel Baptist Church. He was employed for 17 years by the B.P Short and Pavement Company. He was a member of the Butterwood Hunting Club, and had many hobbies but fishing was his passion.

Oliver was a devoted family man who loved his wife, children, and family. He believed in lending a helping hand to those in need. You could find "Ollie" on any given day telling jokes and giving good advice. His motto that he lived by was, "You should never look down on a man unless you are picking him up."

He leaves to cherish his memories: a helpmate of eight years, Mrs. Shonda Henderson of Dinwiddie, Va.; the apple of his eyes, his three children, Shekiria Rawlings and "Daddies Boy" Oliver Jr., and ShayRod Rawlings, all of Dinwiddie Va.; his life givers, Mr. and Mrs. Hawthron Henderson of Dinwiddie, Va.; four siblings, Darlene Shepperson (Carl), Jerome (Tonya) and Dywane Henderson, and Luther (Zorana) Smith, all of Dinwiddie, Va.; a mother and father-in-law, Mr. Jeff and Jeantte Crittendon of Brunswick; a brother-in-law, Terry Crittendon of Brunswick; a sister-in-law, Pam Brown of Emporia; three godchildren, Michael, Amanda, and Latoya Johnson, all of Petersburg, Va.; seven uncles, Willie, Rorris (Amy G.), Alvin (Rose), James Coleman, Leandrew (Gloria), all of Dinwiddie Va., David, Alton (Mary), Glenn and Alton (Mary) Henderson of New Jersey.; four aunts, Shirley Hartwell of McKenney Va., Doris Smith of Waverly, Va., Henrietta Henderson of New Jersey and Dorothy Coleman of Waverly; one great uncle, Frank (Geraldine) Coleman of McKenny, Va.; two great aunts, Henrietta Manson and Genvea Nunually, all of Petersburg, Va.; a host of nieces and nephews that he loved dearly among them devoted Jessica, Jermon Jr., Jerell, and Janee Henderson; cousins and friends, among them devoted Tom, Frankie, Smiley, and Donovan Jones. A special role model whom he called uncle, James Lassiter, and a God-fearing lady whom he loved like an aunt, Ruby Lee Warren.

A funeral will be held at noon on Friday, Oct. 3, 2008 at the Big Bethel Baptist Church, with the pastor, the Rev. A.L. Williams, officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Joseph M. Johnson & Son Funeral Home, McKenney, 478-4411.

Steve and Katrina...you are on top of this thing. I think a note would be great from the class. It doesn't mention his cause of death...had he been sick? His family is in prayers!

Rumors are floating around. I care not to say, as I don’t know if they are fact or fiction…

Does anyone have a picture of Oliver...I can't seem to remember what he looks like.

WOW this is almost to much to bare I have heard of 3 deaths in 2 days all 31-40 yrs. old makes you stop and think just how lucky we all are to have each day given to us....you never know when the good Lord is going to call you home so make the best out of your life and never have regrets...BECAUSE ONLY GOD CAN JUDGE YOU...
Never judge and never assume... May God Bless Each and everyone of my fellow classmates and stay safe until I see you again.

10/02/08 07:12 PM #1134

Katrina Walker

Thanks Deana. God bless you all too.

Not sure if we want to try to implement something more formal when we lose a classmate. Since we have a some money left over, we could possibly send floral arrangements or something to families. Just a thought. I will definitely get the statement out. I'll post it online shortly. I might include Lonnie's poem if it fits.

Judy Abernathy (Bolden)

I just wanted to say that my thoughts and prayers are with Oliver's family and friends to help them overcome their greif. I get very upset when I think about all the classmates over the years that we have lost, but I do know they are now in a better place and one day we will meet again in paradise. God Bless!

To the family of the late Oliver W. Henderson, Sr.

The Dinwiddie County Senior High School Class of 1988 would like to express its deepest sympathy for your loss. We know our words fail to heal the pain you feel right now, but may it bring comfort to know there's a loving God watching over you, and that, throughout this time of need, He'll stay close by your side. You will continue to be in our thoughts and prayers as we hope you find peace, comfort, and strength during this time of grief.

Honoring YOUR memory

So many emotions are whispered
So much remains unsaid
As if a question without resolve
your story, not fully read

An empty seat honors you
An ‘88 tassel blows in the wind
And even though the rhythm changed
Your song will never end

Still the memories flood our hearts,
the laughter over time heals our pain,
Those moments-those things you shared
become sunshine despite the rain

We call those your beautiful surprise
a simple tune and we think of you
We learned whether we laugh or cry-
You are forever RED, WHITE & BLUE

With Sympathy,

The Dinwiddie County Senior High School Class of 1988

Katrina,
You could not have said it any better, it was absolutely beautiful and I know the family will be deepley touched. You are great!!!

10/02/08 09:51 PM #1138

Deana McNew (Harris)

Katrina,

I think that is very well said and a wonderful touch with the poem. NOW who is going to get it to the funeral home and read it?

Would be a nice gesture if someone could be there but like I said I am dealing with 2 other deaths at this time and will be tied up tomorrow.

10/02/08 10:01 PM #1139

A. Yvette Wyche (Griffin)

I will be at the funeral tomorrow I don't mind doing it. I don't know how many of you will be able to attend, maybe for those that are going we can sit together. I know everyone will not be able to make it and that is fine just keep the family in prayer.

Wonderfully done Katrina and Lonnie!

10/03/08 12:18 AM #1140

Katrina Walker

I emailed the statement to one of the funeral directors. It will be read during the acknowledgements. Yvette, glad you're able to attend. Deanna, prayers are with you also - not sure if you mentioned who you lost.

10/03/08 09:13 AM #1141

Steven Grissom

Katrina,

That was beautiful!

I have no problem in sending a floral arrangements or something if everyone else feels the same…

Yvette,

Unfortunately, I will not be able to make it to the services today; however, my most sincere thoughts and prayers go out to the Henderson family and friends.

If you don’t mind, please pass this along to Mr. and Mrs. Henderson and family. They live right down the road from my family.

The funeral director is reserving a section for the class. If you attend, let an usher know you're with '88. Pass the word!

Alton, is the plaque finished? Classmates, should we add Oliver's name if it isn't?

10/03/08 10:37 AM #1143

"J. J. " Wells (Swenson)

Of course we should add his name, but my opinion is only 1! I think everything everyone has said and done is awesome!! I am so glad to be a part of this!
