Jerry was always kind of a funny, goofy guy. Never too serious. My best memory was how he wanted me to help him set some kind of record by riding in a clothes dryer together at the laundromat.
I fell head over heels for Gerry -- literally. I had been in charge of decorations for the Homecoming Dance, and had the unfortunate (in hindsight) idea to up a dark cheesecloth net across the gymnasium ceiling to create the effect of an evening sky. HOW we got it up, I don't remember, but I do remember getting it down. We had borrowed an extension ladder on wheels from the fire department. I was atop in the basket and Gerry was pushing it along. When he pulled back to stop it, it tipped over, and I dropped 21 feet to the gymnasium floor. Next thing I remember is waking up in the hospital with surprisingly only a concussion. Gerry was extremely apologetic, and lived in fear of (my beau at the time) Bruce Magnuson's revenge, and I quite enjoyed a week out of school. And in those days, no one thought of filing a lawsuit -- Damn!
Gerry and I were very close -- but platonic -- friends--he was so quick with his humor, and a great comedian -- I know he is deeply missed by his l oved ones.
Gerry and I were teammates on the Swim Team. I managed to be just a little faster than he was, which I know irritated him, but not much. We both suffered in practice. But we also had enough energy to goof off, too.
I can also remember the skits he put on with others (Jin Niesen for one) that were based on several comics.
And then there were the couple of times while at Mike Roderick's house where we called some random number and Jerry or one of use would respond to their answer as if the connection was from them calling a Pizza place - "John's Pizza, can I take your order?" - talk about mild pranks relative to what goes on with today's kids.
Carol, I remember that Homecoming Dance and your fall because I was also on the Decorations committee. If memory serves, in addition to the concusion, didn't you also break your arm or wrist?

Jerry was a pretty good friend of mine, off and on. No one was quicker with a quip.

Gus,
For what it's worth, Jerry was still expressing regret about that day 40 years later.
