EAST DUBUQUE, Ill. -- Russell J. (Rusty) Thomas, 37, of 250 Copper Kettle Lane, East Dubuque, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2010, at home.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 3, at Miller Funeral Home, East Dubuque, with Pastor Todd Brewer officiating. Burial will be in the East Dubuque Cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 5 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.

He was born on Jan. 18, 1973, son of Pamela A. (Oberhoffer) Thomas and John W. Thomas. Rusty's main focus in life was his son, Zachary John Thomas.

Rusty had a huge heart and a smile for everyone. He adored his nieces, nephew, cousins and many friends. He will always be remembered for his jokes and the fun he found in life.

He was a graduate of Wahlert High School and attended the radiology program at Northeast Iowa Community College, Peosta.

He was very athletic, loved lifting weights and participated in mixed martial arts, where he won many awards. He also was a huge Minnesota Vikings fan.

Surviving are his son, Zachary John Thomas, of Bernard; his parents, Pamela "Pam" Thomas, of East Dubuque, and John W. Thomas, of Dubuque; his sister, Dawn (fiance Doug Weber) Thomas, of Dubuque, and Dawn's children, Brennan, Genevieve and Brooklynn; his maternal grandparents, Russell and Genevieve (Freisinger) Oberhoffer, of East Dubuque; and numerous uncles and aunts.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Robert E. Thomas; an aunt, Carol Thomas; and an uncle and aunt, Bob and Pat Thomas.

A Russell J. Thomas Memorial Fund has been established.
