In Memory

Robert Roethig

Robert C. Roethig Jr., 65, died August 10, 2013, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City.  He was born on July 24, 1948, son of Robert Sr. and Pat (Sweeley) Roethig.

He was "Robert" to some, "Robbie" or "Bob" to others and even to a few, "The Bobster", which Robert graciously tolerated.  He attended St. Columbkille Elementary School, Wahlert High School and Loras College, where he graduated with a degree in theology in 1971.  Bob would eventually earn a master's degree in theology from Loyola University in Chicago.

After graduating from college, Bob spent time at St. Benedict's Monastery in Snowmass, CO.  He also worked as a high school religion teacher in Green Bay, WI, an audiovisual technician at Loras College, and came to be well known as a very capable freelance photographer.  Robbie was actively involved in cable access programming for the last 30 years, presenting programs on a wide range of topics.

To say the least, Bob had a robust and radical commitment for causes he believed in and fought hard for justice during his entire life.  He had been an active member of Dubuque's peace movement for many years.  He touched all people he met in marvelous ways, and no one who spent more than 20 minutes with him was not struck by the many and wondrous aspects of this powerful person.  To say he will be missed is to understate, which is a delightful figure of speech to use as we begin cherishing, as well as guarding our memories of him - delightful, because Robert was, of course, a master of understatement.

Surviving are his sister, Ann, of Dubuque, his brother, Mark, of Milwaukee, and brother, John, of Dubuque.  He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Roethig Sr. and his mother, Pat Roethig.
