In Memory

Roger Schiesl

Roger J. Schiesl, 65, of Dubuque, passed away February 25, 2013 in Chicago.  He was born on February 19, 1948, in Dubuque, son of Dallas L. and Mary E. (Ottavi) Schiesl.  He was raised and lived his entire life in his childhood home on Madison St.  During his youth, he enjoyed playing baseball and basketball.  He had many wonderful memories of his Ottavi grandparents and their family store at 1524 Central Ave.

After graduating from St. Mary's Elementary School and Wahlert High School, he also studied at the University of Northern Iowa, Loras College, and the University of Dubuque.  He married Gloria Godenich on June 2, 1977, at St. Mary's Church in Dubuque.  He was a member of St. Mary's from birth and was a lector there until the church closed its doors.

Roger worked at various jobs during his life, including positions at the Dubuque Packing Co., Combined Insurance of Wisconsin, Modern Business Systems, FDL, Lowe's and Swiss Colony in Peosta.  He was a regular supporter of Wahlert High School and enjoyed attending numerous sporting events.  For more than 40 years Roger donated his blood to the Red Cross, thus saving multiple lives.

Roger loved to socialize with his good friends and his family.  His humor and laughter will be missed.  His sons and grandsons were the light of his life.  He had hoped to be a vital and present part of their lives for many years to come.  His grandchildren will always remember him as Papo.

Surviving are his wife, Gloria; his two sons, Lucas M. (Lacey) Schiesl, of Johnston, IA, and Dallas J. (Kristen) Schiesl, of Chicago; four grandsons; and his brother, Michael R. (Christine) Schiesl, of Dubuque.  He was preceded in death by his parents.

Knowing you've passed away, Roger, brings me sadness.  You always had a smile when we would meet, and we could always share some great high school memories.  Rest in Peace, my friend, I will miss seeing you around Dubuque...
