James C. Weiland, 69, of Dubuque, passed away Friday, April 14, 2017, following a heart attack. Jim was born March 29, 1948 in Dubuque, the son of Vincent and Martha (Tigges) Weiland. He attended St. Joseph Catholic School and Wahlert High School, class of 1966, and Loras College until joining the U.S. Air Force in 1968. He was honorably discharged in 1972.
Jim married the love of his life, Mary Jo (Donovan) Weiland on May 23, 1970. They have two children Eric (Sara) Weiland and Carrie (Tom) Culbertson. Jim worked for Trus Joint as a Technical Representative until retiring in 2009 after a 37-year career. Recently, he was able to fulfill his life-long passion of landscaping, caring for the flower beds at The Meadows Golf Course.
Jim loved his family and friends. Time with his wife was priceless. He treasured any opportunity to hang out with his kids. He cheered on his grandkids at all events. Time with his friends was always memorable. He worked hard making sure his family, flowers, and garden flourished. He made sure to stop and smell his perfectly planted flowers with a cold beer in hand. Jim never missed a Packer game, consistently cheered on the Hawkeyes, and was a Cub fan long before they were champs. He loved his time on the golf course either with his best friend Murph, son Eric, or grandson Brandt. He took care of so many people, supported everyone, was always there for anyone, and was kind to all. He will be sadly missed by all who had the honor to know him.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Jo of Dubuque; his son, Eric (Sara) Weiland of Schaumburg, IL and daughter, Carrie (Tom) Culbertson of Dubuque; grandchildren Brandt, Lauren, Ellana, and Luccia Culbertson of Dubuque, Reese Weiland and Morgan Gold of Schaumburg. Jim and Mary Jo were good friends of mine. I feel bad for Mary Jo because I know how much they cared about one another. The loss of my wife was devestating, so I can relate. Jim was always pleasant to be around, and I admired his character. The kind of man you could trust and have fun with. Rest in Peace, Jim, and may God bless your whole family, forever...
