August 22, 1945 to March 08, 1969 JAMES M NORMAN is on the Wall at Panel W30, Line 79
Killed in Action in Thua Thien Province, South Vietnam
Norm was my best friend and Best Man at my wedding. Except for hockey, we did everything together. Many crazy trips to Superior, the south side at (can't remember the name of the bar) drinking $.50 bowls of beer (each one held about two bottles). After a few bucks we were juiced!! Back to A&W and Henry's on London Road to inevitably watch Karly Kuth buzz around in his Nash Rambler!! It was the best entertainment ever.
Many canoe trips with Norm, Ron Panger, and Fr. Evans. Too many stories to recount. I still miss him a whole lot.
Let's not forget Billy Schmidt (Navy) who also lost his life in that foolishness called Viet Nam.
I have known Jim since attending our elementary school years at Holy Rosary. During recess the boys would play whatever sport was in season. I remember that when we played baseball, Jim was one of the best power hitters in our class. Frequently he's smack a home run into a parking lot above the playing field. He excelled at all sports and was a gifted athlete.
We were neighbors, living only two blocks apart. Jim would have several guys over to his house for cards or cribbage. I have many fond memories of our gaming table and good times after school. Before Jim played for the varsity hockey team at Cathedral, Jim and I were on the Longview Hockey team. He was on a line with two other boys named Jim. The "Jim" line scored most of our team goals. I knew Jim's older brother, John, who attended Cathedral and would frequently ride the bus home with him from Cathedral. Jim's parents were the nicest and sweetest people I knew.
Jim was a dear friend. I have the greatest respect for him and his courage and valor in serving our county. He was taken from us far too soon. I miss his smile and gentle manner. John Boreen
Jim Norman ... Our C.H.S. Foot ball Quarterback ... A quiet and mild manner fellow who was simply a Very nice fellow. Jim and I met each other down at the A & W on 21st ave . east just prior to Jim's graduation from U.M.D.. Jim told me that he had orders to report for basic training with the army . This was NOT good news but Jim was resolute to comply and serve as directed . I did not know Jim extremely well but I respected him greatly as Jim always was perhaps a bit more mature than most of us and always kind.. Jim's parents did a superb job of raising a dignified and loving individual who lived to serve and die for us all. May God take care of Jim.
