Herbert Leroy Andrew III departed this life on May 8, 2017 after sustaining injuries in a car accident.
Herby was born March 6, 1937 in Easton, Maryland the son of the late Herbert Leroy Andrew Jr. and Dorothy Warner Andrew. He lived with his grandparents Herbert and Edith Andrew in his early years, from one year old until he started first grade. He attended Easton public schools and graduated in the class of 1955. After high school, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and served at various bases including Sampson AFB - NY, Francis E Warren AFB - Cheyenne WY, Scott AFB – Belleville IL, Plattsburgh NY, as well as in Soderstrum, Greenland and England.
Herby returned to Easton from the Air Force, married the former Della Mae Altvater, and started a career in farming, first at Knightly Farm in Miles River Neck, then at Galloway Farm, and finally at North Dover Farm. He dairy farmed at North Dover for over two decades and continued actively grain farming until 2012. Herby leaves behind the North Dover Farm, Sunnyside Farm and Westminster Farm in farmland preservation to help sustain agriculture in Maryland for future generations.
Community service to Talbot County was a lifelong commitment for Herby. Although too numerous to mention, he felt the following were most memorable. He was a director of the Talbot Bank and later Shore Bancshares from 1977 to 2014; retiring as the Chairman of Talbot Bank in 2014. He served on the Talbot County Council for four terms starting in 1978. While on County Council, he served on the Talbot County Children’s Council, Workforce Investment Board, the State Council on Technical Education, and the Maryland Association of Counties Board of Directors. He also served a term on the Pickering Creek Environmental Center board. Herby’s dedication to honoring veterans for their service was embodied in his generous support of the American Legion Post #70, of which he was a life member. His membership with the Talbot County Farm Bureau also spanned decades. Of more recent years, he volunteered on the Tuesday construction crew for Habitat for Humanity Choptank. Herby and Della endowed the Andrew Family Foundation at Mid-Shore Community Foundation to continue giving to Talbot County.
Herby was a charter member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, coming from one of the original three churches, Ebenezer Methodist Church. Herby married Della at the church on July 14, 1962 and was an active member thru last Sunday’s services. They shared faith and a family of friends within the church.
In addition to his wife of 55 years Della, Herby is survived by his son Roy Andrew (Debbie) of Suffolk Virginia, daughter Nancy Andrew (Rick Leader) of Easton, Maryland, and a sister Dorothy Brittingham of Easton, Maryland.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 20, 2017 at 3 PM at Saint Mark’s United Methodist Church at 100 Peachblossom Road, Easton, where friends may call one hour prior to the service. A reception will follow at the church. The interment will be private at the Eastern Shore Veterans Cemetery at Beulah.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be sent to the American Legion Post #70 – mortgage fund (29511 Canvasback Drive Easton, MD 21601) or Habitat for Humanity Choptank (P.O. Box 2366 Easton, MD 21601 or https://www.habitatchoptank.org/get-involved/individuals/donate/ ).
