Obituary for Melvin Otto Thume
Melvin Otto Thume, of Preston, passed away at Talbot Hospice House on December 11th, 2024. He was 87.
Born in Trappe, on January 30, 1937, he was the son of the late Charles Melvin Thume and Margaret Augusta (Greenwood) Thume. Following high school, Melvin enlisted in the United States Air Force serving his country before being Honorably Discharged in 1959. Following his time in the Air Force, he worked at a boatyard in Oxford. Melvin was dating Peggy Steenken, who was working in the feed mill in Easton. Most days he managed to find an excuse to go to Easton for supplies and then slipped in the back door of the feed mill to visit Peggy. We are not sure what boating supplies were in the feed mill but Melvin and Peggy soon got married and moved to Trappe where they raised two children.
Melvin had many jobs in his life but was most proud of his woodworking and gardening.
Melvin is survived by his wife of 64 years, the former Peggy Steenken. He is also survived by his children; Wayne Thume (Lisa) and Joyce Thume; along with 3 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Along with his parents, he is predeceased by his sister, Sue Thume Brittingham.
A graveside service, with military honors will be held at Landing Neck Cemetery, Landing Neck Road, Trappe, MD on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, at 11am. Following the service there will be a gathering at the Trappe Fire House.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Melvin’s memory are suggested to Talbot Hospice, 586 Cynwood Ave, Easton, MD 21601 https://www.fhnfuneralhome.com/obituaries/Melvin-Thume/#!/Obituary
