Brian Gambrell

Brian Kirby Gambrell, 45, of Norman, Oklahoma, was born January 23, 1968 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and passed away on June 1, 2013 as the result of a motorcycle accident. He grew up in Eau Claire, Wisconsin and graduated from Memorial High School.

Brian played baseball in Little League, Babe Ruth, American Legion ball, and in high school. He started playing basketball at the Eau Claire YMCA in third grade and went on to star on the Memorial High School Varsity team. Brian spent one year at Seminole Junior College in Seminole, Oklahoma where he played on the basketball team.

As an adult he played disc golf in Norman and around the state of Oklahoma. Brian lived in Minneapolis, Minnesota, for many years and worked as a teacher's aide for the St. Paul Public School System. He moved to Oklahoma in 2000 and worked at the University of Oklahoma for several years. He currently worked for American Heritage Homes in Oklahoma City.

Brian loved his family, riding his motorcycle, watching sports on television, and playing disc golf. Nicknamed "Foggy" by his golf buddies, he played several times a week. He was a member of the Sooner Disc Golf Club and the Professional Disc Golf Association. Brian loved life and enjoyed singing as well as entertaining his friends and family with funny stories. He was preceded in death by his finance, Mary Morgan Renfro; stepfather, Sheldon Carlson; granddad, G.L. "Doc" Gambrell; grandmother, Mary Katherine Kirby Owings; grandfather, David Kirby; step grandfather, Jimmy Owings; uncle and aunt, David and Rogna Kirby; and uncle, Danny Miller. He is survived by his mother, Sue Carlson of Norman; his father and step mother, Leonard Gambrell and Lori Miller of Mesilla, NM; his sister, Rochelle Gambrell-Somers and brother-in-law Nate Somers of Savage, MN; his brother, Lance Gambrell of Mesilla, NM; his stepbrother Scott Carlson of Barron, WI, his grandmother Helen Gambrell of Sentinel, OK; his nephew and niece, Carter Tweith and Olivia Gambrell-Byrd of Savage; a great niece, Manidoo Smith; a great nephew, Jaylen Tweith and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and numerous friends.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, June 22, 2013, at the Trinity Baptist Church, 810 Peters Ave., Norman, OK. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Sooner Disc Golf Club, c/o Sue Carlson, 1817 Ridgewood Drive, Norman, OK 73071. A scholarship is being established in Brian's name to help young players attend tournaments and other events.
