In Memory

Ronnie Meek

Ronnie Meek

Ronald Edward Meek was born on December 20, 1951 in Shenandoah, Iowa to Edward and Pauline Meek.  He died in New York, NY on October 14, 1990.  He was survived by his parents and two brothers, Dennis and Daniel.  Dennis died in 2004.

Dennis received his B.J. from the University of Missouri School of Journalism in 1972 and M.A. in 1974 from Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies in Washington, D.C.  He was an international economist for the U.S. Treasury in Washington, D.C. from 1974-75.  From 1975 to 1978 he was an analyst for Gulf Oil in Pittsburgh, PA.  In 1978 he moved to St. Louis and was the Manager for International Economic and Political Analysis for Monsanto Company.

Unfortunately the only information we have after our 10th class reunion in 1979 is that he moved to New York, NY.

Probably the smartest guy I've met in my life. If you needed the answer to ANYTHING, he could come up with it. We used to kid him about memorizing the encyclopedia along with the dictionary. From science club to the prom he had the ideas and we implemented them. Just hope some of it may have rubbed off from all those hours of projects. He was a remarkable guy! Sad to know he's gone.

Ronnie was the only one I knew who would stay up as long as it took to find out who had been nominated at the Republican and Democratic conventions. I miss talking politics and everything else with him at all hours.

Information found of the internet indicates that Ronnie was born in Shenandoah, Iowa on December 20, 1951.  He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Missouri in 1972.  BTW, that's a 4 year education in just three years, no real surprise for those who knew him. He then received his Master of Arts degree from John Hopkins University in 1974. Nothing is known after 1974 except that he passed away in New York, New York on October 14, 1990 at the age of 38.  I hope this fills in some of his post Knox County High School activity for those who are interested.  Please add anything you can.

I believe Ronnie lived in St. Louis for awhile, and one of my regrets is not keeping in touch with him then.  Of my many memories of Ronnie, one is how excited he was over the release of the Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album and how we gathered at his house to listen to the record the first time. I know I was pretty cluelss about any music of significance, but his enthusiasim was infectious. Thanks, Richard, for this post.

I've been meaning to update Ronnie's 'In Memory' page since Rich and Pat commented several weeks ago.  I pulled out our 10-year reunion booklet and used the information he sent plus what Rich found.  My cousin found Pauline's obituary earlier this year when she was looking for some of her class information and it mentioned his death in 1990.  He really was an exceptional guy.
