After many years with Hewlett Packard, Tom was struck down with a series of small continuing strokes and had to retire early. He lived the last years of his life as best he could championing LGBTQ+ issues, even as his eyesight and hearing slowly failed and pain began to rack his body. His heart was what finally gave out and he passed away peacefully at home. Since he knew he had a limited amount of time left to accomplish what he wanted concerning his estate, he worked to create the Magnus Hirschfeld Trust Fund, an future scientific research grant to be used for the unbiased scientific study concerning the sexuality of the brain in relation to the gender of the body. The creation of that trust was his final act in life and will be his legacy going forward. It will be bequeathed in full to Oregon State University upon the death of his spouse. May he find that long sought after peace in death that he couldn't always find in life. However, he died knowing that he was very much loved and will be sorely missed.
