Funeral Notice

Times-Picayune, The (New Orleans, LA) - Monday, August 10, 2009

Robert Lyons Tiel, M.D., a neurosurgeon, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly in Madison, MS, on Aug 2, 2009, at the age of 55.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday August 12, 2009 from the chapel of Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home Highland Colony, with visitation Wednesday from 12:00pm till 3:30pm at the Funeral Home.

Dr. Tiel was a Professor of neurosurgery at the University of Miss Medical Center,and recently began work with a private practice group and Crossgates Hospital in Brandon MS. He had held previous academic positions at Louisiana State University Medical Center in New Orleans and Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, MI.

He received his undergraduate degree at Stanford University in 1975 and his medical degree at the University of Minnesota in 1980. He completed an internship in general surgery and a residency in neurosurgery at Henry Ford Hospital.

Dr. Tiel developed international fame for his contributions to the management of nerve injuries, tumors and entrapment's as well as their intraoperative electrophysiologic evaluation. He spent 12 years working with Dr. David G. Kline in New Orleans. During his career, he published 40 peer reviewed papers and 20 chapters and was a frequent invited speaker at scientific meetings.

He combined wisdom, warmth and wit in his medical career as well as loving affection in his personal life. He will be sorely missed by patients, colleagues, neurosurgical trainees, medical students, friends and family alike.

He is survived by his loving wife, Constance,and four children, Mary Robinson, Edward Sawyer, Michael Sawyer and Aaron W. Tiel. Survived also by his mother, Dolores Tiel, sister, Lori S. Decesaris (Vincent) James B. Tiel (Tammy) and nieces and nephew.
