Martha Eaves Gubbrud was one teacher I'll never forget. I remember I was applying to college and wanted to have top grades on my transcript. We had to write a final paper for her history class and it was a big part of the grade, so I needed an A. I spent a lot of time on it, and they were handed back on the last day of class. I got mine and it came back with a B-. I waited in line as the class said goodbye to her. When I got to the front of the line, she smiled at me, crossed off the B- and put an A on it before I said anything. She said she was hoping I would come to her about it. Said it was the best paper she had gotten in all her classes and thought maybe I had plagiarized or copied one of my brother's papers. She said if I had written it I would know how good it was and would dispute the grade. If I had copied it I would just accept the B-. She taught me to never just accept an evaluation that I thought was unfair. And I wondered how many times it may have happened before and I just walked away mad!
