William Herbert Thayer passed away from cancer on January 22, 2023. He was married to Kathleen Thayer for 33 years. He moved to Spokane from Minneapolis in 1990 with his wife, they lived for 33 years in Deep Creek Canyon. He transformed the land they lived on in many ways and made it beautiful. He went from being a city man to a countryman rapidly and loved it. He would hold weekly gatherings for friends to talk and hit golf balls at targets that he created. Those memories are important to all his friends. He and his wife were rescuers of lost and abandoned animals. They raised goats for many years. He was also an avid skier and bike rider.
When he lived in Minneapolis, he was actively involved in sports such as softball, as he was also in Spokane. His friends remember him as a man who was grounded in Jesus Christ, and he showed that love through his relationship with people. He loved to listen to sports with his friends and sit to visit and listen to their stories. He will be so missed. There will be a memorial gathering at the end of April at Herb's and Kathleen's home in Deep Creek Canyon.
Herbie was a great guy. We used to sneak into Edina Country Club after dark and wade through the muck at the bottom of the water hazards to extract golf balls. Herbie would then pack them in egg cartons and sell them to golfers in, as I recall, the parking lot of the course. Not sure he got rich, but he picked up a dime or two. RIP, Herbie!
Herbie was a special friend of mine and to many others as well. We grew up in the Cornelia neighborhood together and I remember he was a great athlete, and as kids I remember that whatever sport we played he always got picked first. Later as young adults we were roommates by Lake Harriet and later on Grays Bay. When I was single I always liked going to bars with Herb because he always attracted a lot of girls! He also had a deep faith and we went to church together on occasion. Many of us were sad when he moved to Spokanne but that was a perfect place for him. I was lucky to be his friend.
Yeah John a lot of great memories in the old hood with Herb including all our great skiing days. Herb was humble that sometimes hid his intellect and sharp sense of humor. We called him "man of few wants" as he just needed enough money to pay his bills with a few extra bucks in his pocket and he was a happy guy. And Michael your story about the golf balls is hilarious! Herb took me over to the 9 hole Normandale, later Fred Richards by our houses and by then had figured out to use a rake so we didn't have to get into the muck! In my cheapness I kept doing it on my own and don't think I bought a golf ball until I was 30
