I have many fond memories of Mike. When I first met him - 9th grade, I think - he loved 'All in the Family'. I remember many of the amusing ditties he was fond of reciting and I can still picture the cartoons he loved to draw. Mike came up with the slogan "Pound Mound into Ground Round" that was put on a button for one of our football games. His extra-curricular achievements included being class President, Governor of Boys State, and making it to the final round of the State Debate Tournament in 1976. In his twenties, Mike continued his interest in politics in Chicago and was planning to run for office some day.
Mike died while vacationing with his brother in Mexico. He was swimming in the ocean and got caught by a rip tide. His brother swam out to help him, but unfortunately was too late.
I have at least 3 buttons that Mike did for our homecomings...a gifted comedic artist!
It was his sense of humor that drew me too him. Moved to Edina when they sent a flaming piano down the stairs at his Minneapolis public school. Showed up in 7th grade and sat on the girls side of the room (he was ahead of his time!) and I thought that was odd....he didn't care about other's opinions of him, and that didn't change.
He ran for Student Council president with me as VP. He lost, I won. I don't think he ever lost another thing in his life.
He picked me up at the airport and put me up when I came back into town and we double dated with our Jr. Prom dates.
When I took leave of my senses and started dating someone else, he talked Jane into being patient with me.
Besides what Rob recalls, he was on the Chicago Symphony Board, the successful campaign manager for Geokaris in her IL race, and a rising international exec with Quaker and Abbott Labs.
He was the best man at our wedding in 1984 and died in the Family vacation Rob talked about. If he had had a choice of how he would have wanted to pass, I think that's how he would have wanted to go, in the arms of his brother David after spending a vacation with his Family.
Very little time goes by I don't think if him, and what a man he was and what he might be today. Probably running against Hillary and with his integrity, probably would have been up by 30 points.

He is missed.

Hey Rob, let's raise one to him at the Reunion!
