Curtis Hugh Smith, 52, of Edmond, Okla. passed away on July 12, 2016 after a long illness. Together, he and his wife, Cheryl Johnson Smith, shared 21 years of marriage and a wonderful family. Born in Oklahoma City on January 12, 1964, Curtis is the son of Judy Shipley Smith and the late Charles Ray Smith. He graduated from Edmond Memorial High School and married Cheryl Johnson on May 20, 1995. He was a member of Village Baptist Church and served as a deacon. He was a project supervisor at Redbud Contractors until 2013 when he left due to illness. For many years, Curtis coached all three of his sons on The Grizzlies baseball teams and served as an Awana leader at Village Baptist Church. He was a talented woodworker and craftsman and invented and patented a device to assist arthritis patients in opening medication bottles. He loved country music, John Denver, camping with his family and old John Wayne movies. He loved animals, especially his beloved dog Roo. Curtis is survived by his wife, Cheryl; three sons, Nathan, Ryan and Ian; and his mother, Judith Davis, all of Edmond; brother, Charles R. Chuck Smith, Jr. and stepmother, Theresa Smith, both of Oklahoma City; and stepdad, Thomas Davis of Austin, Texas. A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, August 9, 2016, at the Village Baptist Church Chapel, 10600 N. May Avenue, Oklahoma City. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in memory of Curtis Smith to help inner-city youth attend camp at Kanakuk Kamps.
