Biology Field Trip 1979
This Field trip went beyond the scope of most field trips. Our teachers - Bob Koole, John Sneep, Jack VandenPol, Derk VanEerden and Elaine Kitchen - took us to the wilderness of Jasper, Alberta for several days of "scientific" exploration.
What we learned about rocks, plants, animals, water, and the fragile ecosystems in the harsh climate of the Rocky Mountains has stayed with us. We hear ourselves teaching what we learned to those younger than us. When we hike and camp we hear echoes of lessons on lichens, how these small plants feed larger animals, how clean water sustains both plant and animal life, and how succession makes a forest strong.
No classroom lesson could have taught as much in three days as we learned in our time together in Jasper. Beyond the science, we learned to wash our hair with ice-cold water, how good hot cereal tastes on cold mornings, how the warmth of a fire can draw us together.
