Searching Missing Classmates
Posted Friday, September 16, 2011 11:20 AM

I have devoted a lot of effort to tracking down "missing classmates", some of it successful, some not.  As the "deadline" approaches, I have decided to post my info here, so others can join in the effort.:

<<<Tim Pavlis>>>:

The 28Sep60 EP Herald Post article on National Merit Scholar finalists says Timothy Pavlis, 16, is son of Mrs Emily Pavlis of 8412 Diana Dr; is member of French Honor Society, interested in math, creative writing, philosophy, and music, and has written a story to appear in a national science fiction magazine.Timothy Pavlis apparently appears on p172 of 1963 Standford "Quad" yearbook, and in index (p452 or 453).  Elsewhere I found a reference to: Stanford University, Department of English, Honors Theses, 1965: Pavlis, Timothy, "The dimensions of myth in Absalom, absalom!"

[ A later discovery: from EP Herald Post of June 22, 1965: "Timothy Pavlis, son of Emmeline Pavlis of 8412 Diana Dr., has been awarded a National Merit Scholarship.  He is studying for his teacher's certificate and was graduated June 13 from Stanford University with a B.A. degree in English."   The "scholarship" word sounds erroneous since he had already graduated from college, but it is interesting that "Emily" has now become "Emmeline", which is probably the correct name.]

I called Stanford Alum center.  They said his file was listed as "active" but they only had a phone number: 415-853-9714 , and it might be very old.  It doesn't seem to work.

My research also indicated a Lauren Escot-Pavlis doing a postdoc in psych at Stanford (possibly now completed) and I suspect she may be related to (possibly married to) a young Tim Pavlis who may have been previously located in the NY area. I have sent at least one email to Lauren (at a Stanford email) with no response. Probably her maiden name is Escot, and the young Tim Pavlis, may possibly be a son of our Tim Pavlis. Or maybe not.

I sent an email to a UTEP professor named Terry L Pavlis; his response: "Afraid I dont' know a timothy pavlis.  I grew up in south dakota, and moved to el paso about 5 years ago.  any relatives in South Dakota?  Not many people with the name Pavlis." signed Terry Pavlis. Professor, Geological Sciences, UTEP"

Ancestry.com search turned up several directory "hits" for a Tim Pavlis in British Columbia, but no detailed info was available to me unless I signed up for the pricey International version.  I didn't.

<<<Robert Taylor>>>:  (a rather common name, unfortunately)

Texas birth records show a Robert Taylor (no middle name/initial) born in El Paso county on 4Jul43 to Ira Neptin Taylor and Theodora (Roseborough) Taylor.  But there were a lot of Robert Taylors born about then in Texas, and more elsewhere. I saw Bob at TWC(UTEP) in about 1962 and he said he had dropped out of Stanford and was playing trombone professionally around El Paso.  Chico Gholz reports contact with him some years later when he had been participating in the "Hamlet Pacification" program in South Vietnam.  Our efforts have turned up nothing else thus far.

<<<Dexter Mapel>>> (not Maple!) (oddly missing from the website list although he was a May61 grad!):

Dexter Morehead Mapel born 21 Dec 1942 to Dexter Roundy Mapel, Jr and Grace Ann (Miller). He married Karleen Marie Kuster in El Paso 27 Jan. 1968.The 23Apr1969 EPHerald Post lists (with photo) him as keynote speaker at a Jaycees meeting. He is listed in Public Records: 2601 Altura Ave, El Paso, TX, 79930-1710 (1996) tel:915-565-1801, and 1626 E Edgewater Dr, Tempe, AZ, 85283-2166 (1995). This is almost certainly him (from a Google search): "I would like to express heartfelt thanks to Dexter and Karlene[sic] Mapel of The Book Island, an antiquarian bookstore and search service in Phoenix, Arizona.." The Book Island Inc, 23 W Jefferson Street, Phoenix, AZ, 85003-2304 (602) 254-8405.  CORPORATE LISTING: THE BOOK ISLAND   23 WEST JEFFERSON ST, PHOENIX,AZ  85003-2304 KARLEEN K MAPEL:PRESIDENT/CEO Date of Taking Office: 10/03/1991 AMANDA M MAPEL: SECRETARY Date of Taking Office: 01/19/2002 [Company later dissolved (2005?)]

Google search found an Amanda Mapel in Class of 1996, Marcos De Niza H.S. (Tempe, AZ), which fits, putting her birth date at ca. 1979 or 1980, with present age (in 2011) as 31 or 32. Also, a Feb 28, 2010 RadarIs: – Amanda Mapel, 31. Aliases >>>. Amanda M Mapel, Amanda Marie Mapel, ... Las Vegas , NV; Ithaca, NY, Dexter M Mapel, Karleen K Mapel ...So is Amanda Marie Mapel a daughter? Is she the Amanda Mapel who was on the "Jeopardy" quiz show in 2006?  The Amanda Mapel who is Senior Training and Development Specialist at Harrah's Entertainment (Gambling & Casinos) Las Vegas, Nevada?  I don't know.

Dexter was an active republican when that was still a small minority party in Texas.

Does anyone have full classmates.com email priveleges? Suzie Bowman and Lynn Peterson Dalleck have left messages/comments on classmates.com but they have never signed on to classcreator.com and they need to be encouraged to do so.  I was able to put something on my classmates.com profile urging readers to sign to classcreator.com but I had to disguise it as " classcreator (dot-com) " because they have a software censor that deletes any references to competing websites.

Also, I thought I had tracked down Barbara Archer in Houston, and talked on telephone to someone who claimed to be able to contact her, but nothing has turned up.  Can anyone help?  --Terry Henderson

Terry,

I found a Timothy Pavlis listed in San Jose, California as of 1992.  His address was 97 South 13th Street, San Jose, CA 95112.  No current information seems to be available.  The last time I saw Tim was on Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley in 1962 or 1963.  I just bumped into him there on my way to or from class.  As we know, he was attending Stanford at the time.  I have the full international version of Ancestry.com, but it didn't produce any useful information about Tim in British Columbia.

Tim was a prolific writer in high school.  Before his senior year he had published several stories in science fiction magazines.  I too would very much like to find him.

I have also been looking for John Elliot.  Don Hackett says he lacked one course for graduation. That's sounds really bizarre for a National Merit Scholarship finalist.  I recall that I had all of my courses completed by the end of my junior year except Civics and Modern Problems.  I found the El Paso Herald Post article of September 28, 1950 that announced National Merit Scholarship finalists, giving the following info:

"John H. Elliott, 17, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John C. Elliott of 9601 Gschwind street.  He has participated in the Science Seminar and is a member of the Science Club.  He attended both the Computer and the Matrhematics Institutes.  his hobby is archery."

Tax records show that the Gschwind property is currently owned by MICHAEL L & ALICE J PEYTON, of 1735 HENLEY AVE, INDEPENDENCE, IA 50644-9254, and there were also deed transactions in 2000 and 1995 involving GLENNA L HUNT,  JAMES & CHERYL PRICE, HILDA T NOWERS, HILDA T  WEAVER, and GLENNA HUNT

I have found no helpful obituary or Social Security Death Index listings thus far.  Of course John H. Elliott and John C. Elliott are such common names that things are difficult.

Don Hacket has informed me that John H. Elliott is John Henry Elliot, but so far that has not produced new results.

AHAH!  I "joined" facebook to contact Pete Drypolcher.  It worked! Now he has made a profile here. I suggest his old friends urge him to put up memories, comments, etc.!

I recently talked to Suzie Bowman on the phone, but my powers of persuasion were apparently found wanting (no profile has appeared).

Also I talked on the phone to a house in Pearland (south of Houston) that according to tax records is jointly owned by Barbara Archer and her sister Anita, and I was told that the info would be passed on to Barbara, but no luck.

Now for James Benner, who is a professional engineer in San Antonio....

I just talked on the phone to Jolene Borsberry Rogers in Oklahoma, and expect her to sign on soon (but not to attend).

Still no luck with the phone message I left for Jim Benner in San Antonio, or from the phone message I left on the phone of Johnny Armijo's brother Gabe.
