Karen was a member of the Class of '62. In her senior year she was recognized in Who's Who at Irvin High School for her many accomplishments and activities, including National Honor Society, Future Business Leaders of America, Varsity Cheerleader, Club Panel and Modern Dance. Karen also represented Irvin as Royalty to Other Schools.

Karen was not only my good friend, she was also an important part of my history "when we were young." She made a grand entrance at Irvin when she performed a jazzy cheer (and cartwheel, I think) at tryouts. At first I admired her for superficial reasons--that her shoes always matched her outfit, that she had her own Princess phone, and that she was blonde. In the 70s when I moved back to the area, Karen and I again took up our shared history. I came to admire her for more than her shoes, for she was a terrific support for her children and grandchildren, she was a smart, hard-working teacher, and she could be so funny the whole room would crack up laughing. I also respected, envied, her solid faith. Our lunches were always full of "news."  I will miss that and much more, but I will cherish most the days when we were young. God bless you, my funny friend.  Linda Thompson Harris, '62

Karen was a big part of the life of Irvin and of our graduating class of 1962.  She even later became part of the Irvin staff for a few years, making her one of Irvin's icons!   She was a valued activist in her church and will be missed by so many people. Monday morning I was surprised and VERY saddened when another mutual friend called to tell me about Karen's passing. Those high school years now seem entirely like another world. I'm glad that we all have Irvin's web site and other ways of keeping up with each other over the years. And I'm so glad '62 grads were able to see her at our 50th reunion in 2012. She left an impressing legacy!
