Joseph Alan “Joe” Bertelsen

Age 53, of Wyncoop Creek Road, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 7, 2005 at St. Joseph’s Hospital.
He was born February 20, 1951 in Towanda, PA, the son of Arthur Bertelsen and Eleanor Bertelsen White.
Joseph was predeceased by his brother, David Allen Bertelsen Sr.; sister-in-law, Deborah Bertelsen; stepfather, Jack White. He is survived by his loving wife, Susan Wenzel-Bertelsen of Chemung, NY; beloved daughters and sons-in-law, Karen (Dean) Morgan II of Elmira, NY; Barbara (Mark) Emanuel of Tucson, AZ; loving mother, Eli White of Elmira, NY; father, Arthur Bertelsen, also of Elmira, NY; brothers, Robert (Sandy) Bertelsen of North Chemung, NY; Douglas Bertelsen of Laverne, AL; sisters, Nancy Bertelsen of Las Vegas, NV; Kathy (Larry) Rhode of Horseheads, NY; 4 grandchildren; nephews, David A. Bertelsen Jr., Randy Bertelsen, and Kyle Bertelsen; along with several other nieces and nephews. Joe, as he was affectionately known, is also survived by his special friends, Tom Wild, Gary Osgood, Pat Rhinehart, Eric Stranger, and Dave Updyke. His faithful canine companion, ‘Hillary,’ will also miss Joe.
Joseph was a Veteran of the US Army and proudly served his country from 1971 to 1977. He enjoyed the outdoors and all the nature on Wyncoop Creek Road, especially ‘Critter Creek’. Joe was a NASCAR enthusiast and was a great fan of the # 3, the late Dale Earnhardt Sr.
Family and friends are invited to call at the Olthof Funeral Home, Inc., 1050 Pennsylvania Ave., Elmira, NY on Friday, February 11, 2005 from 4 to 5 PM. A Memorial Service celebrating Joe’s life will be held there following the visitation. (5:00 PM) The Reverend Anne Mowery will officiate.
In accordance with Joe’s wishes, he will be cremated at the Southport Crematorium at a time convenient to his family, and his remains will be scattered at ‘Critter Creek’.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to Susan at 1371 Wyncoop Creek Road, Chemung, NY 14825 or to the Chemung County Humane Society & SPCA, 2435 Route # 352, Elmira, NY 14903 in his memory.
