Richard Matanle ***

MATANLE, Richard Keith., 72, of Glen Rock on November 20, 2023. Born in Elmira NY, Ric settled in Glen Rock in 1983, putting down deep roots there to enjoy his family and friends, and pursue his many hobbies and interests. Before his retirement in 2016 he was an attorney with Carella, Bryne, Cecchi, Brody & Agnello, PC of Roseland NJ. Ric was a parishioner of St. Catharine RC Church in Glen Rock. Ric was an avid reader of historical non-fiction and classics. He enjoyed listening to music of all genres and playing (by ear) the piano, guitar, and saxophone. He swam daily from June through October in his impeccably maintained pool and grilled with ease year-round. He was a skilled model boat builder. He loved sports, especially basketball. He was reserved about the fact that the basketball scoring record he set at Elmira’s Southside HS (before the three-point shot was established) was not broken until the mid-1990’s. He cherished time spent with his wife, children, sons-in-law and grandchildren, especially at holidays and poolside. Richard is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Cathleen Matanle; three daughters and their husbands, Elizabeth Spellman (Kevin), Molly Nieves (Brandon) and Lynn Browne (Brandon); one son, James Keith Matanle; and five grandchildren, Claire Nieves, William Spellman, Jack Nieves, Paige Spellman and Keith Browne. He is also survived by one brother Stephen Hayward Matanle, his wife Betsy and their children. Vander Plaat Colonial Home, 13-31 Saddle River Road, Fair Lawn handled the arrangements. The family requests donations may be made in Richard’s memory to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
