Fredric Pashkow

PASHKOW, Dr. Fredric J A dynamic cardiologist, author, and healthcare executive, died suddenly on Friday, December 2 at the age of 66 in Los Angeles. Pashkow specialized in healthcare technology, cardiac rehabilitation and the development of pharmaceuticals for the treatment and prevention of heart disease. He served as the Chief Medical Officer of Cardax Pharmaceuticals since 2007, and was previously the Vice President of Medical Affairs for Sanofi-Aventis responsible for the cardiovascular/thrombosis portfolio (Plavix, Lovenox). During his career he served as the Medical Director at Queen's Medical Center Heart Institute in Honolulu, spent ten years at the Cleveland Clinic, 14 years in private practice in Loveland, Colorado, and pioneered community-based cardiac rehabilitation by co-founding HeartWatchers International. 
Pashkow appealed to both professional and lay audiences, publishing more than 100 peer-reviewed articles and manuscripts, teaching in the field and university settings, and making media appearances including "Charlie Rose" and the "Today Show." Books he co-authored include "Clinical Cardiac Rehabilitation," "50 Things To Do When the Doctor Says It's Heart Disease," and "The Woman's Heart Book," for which he was honored by the American Heart Association with the Women's Legacy Award. He was recognized as a Fellow by five national organizations, including the American Heart Association, and served on numerous committees and editorial boards. Born in New Jersey in 1945 to William and Laura Pashkow, he grew-up primarily in New York and Ohio, was an alumni of Cornell University (A.B.), Ohio State University (M.D.), and completed his residency and fellowship at the University of Chicago. He served as the Chief of Cardiology in the 101st Airborne Division of the U.S. Army where he received medals of commendation. From his formative years as an Eagle Scout, Pashkow relished nature and outdoor activities including skiing, kayaking, sailing, hiking, and his favorite hobby, fly-fishing. Pashkow also appreciated all forms of art. He served in leadership roles at various institutions that reflected his values, including the High Plains Arts Council, the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, Rockwell Springs Trout Club, the Nature Conservancy Palmyra Project and Har Shalom Synagogue. Locally he was a member of Wilshire Boulevard Temple. Married to Peg Solomon Pashkow since 1967, Fred leaves behind his loving wife and family including son Matthew Pashkow (Jessica), granddaughters Mirabelle and Juliette Pashkow; daughter Mindy Silverstein (Adam), grandsons Maxwell and Benjamin Silverstein; and sister Marjorie Kaplan.
