I know this sounds odd, but I still think about and miss Larry, even though he passed away fairly soon after high school. He was small, but he wasn't afraid of anything or anybody. I can remember when he, Carvalho, Parkinson and I were playing rat ball in the gym, and one of the coaches started yelling at us, we shouldn't be there for some reason and to get out. We were cowed, Larry started dribbling circles around the coach. We started giggling like girls. The coach started laughing. The coach said hell with you guys (with a smile) finish playing and get out. We finished playing. Chuck Brown
We traveled in separate circles but I have a similar memory of Larry. At a party, Bobby Carvalho and John Miller got into a fight. It was a tough fight between two big, tough guys. Larry was like Bobby's cornerman, staying close and calmly repeating , "You got the reach Bobby, You got the reach."
Months later, I got into a fight with Steve Hammers. I didn't fight all that much and don't think any of my buddies were there. I stayed strong and whacked Hammers a couple of times. But he made a come back and nailed me on the temple. I was woozy and vulnerable. Then I heard the voice of Larry Castor saying the same thing to me that he said to his good good friend, Bobby, "you got the reach, Dan, you got the reach."
I recovered and came back on strong till the cops came and busted it up. But it meant the world too me that Carrot had been in my corner.
