Jeanne Sluder Mulvaney, 73, of 104 Lanette Drive, Spartanburg, SC, passed away Saturday, December 29, 2007, at the Spartanburg Hospital for Restorative Care, after a brief illness.
Born on February 23, 1934, in Asheville, NC, she was the daughter of the late James Denver and Lucille Brooks Sluder. An honor graduate of Leicester High School in Leicester, NC, she was a member of the winning 1951 Buncombe Co. Basketball Championship team and was named an All-Tournament Forward. A gifted writer and public speaker, she earned her B.S. in Ed. English & Social Studies and M.A. in Ed. Guidance & Counseling from Western Carolina University. She also completed 30 hours toward her Doctorate at USC-Columbia.
A professional educator for 36 years, she started her career teaching English and social studies at David Millard Jr. High in Asheville, NC. She continued teaching for several years, and while an English Instructor at Asheville-Buncombe Technical College, she completed her Masters and began her career in Guidance at Enka High School in Enka, NC. In 1979, she left her position as Director of Guidance at Enka and moved to Spartanburg, SC, where she became Director of Guidance at Chapman High School in Inman, SC. She remained at Chapman until retiring in 1995. She was a member of several organizations, including: NEA, Spartanburg County Education Association, Delta Kappa Gamma, SC Association for Counseling and Development, and American Business Women’s Association, where she was voted Woman of the Year by the Sky-Hy Chapter in Asheville, NC. She enjoyed playing golf and was a member of the SC Ladies Golf Association as well as the Women’s Golf Association, Three Pines Country Club. She was a founding member of Church of Jesus, Our Risen Savior Catholic Church and a frequent lector. A voracious reader, she loved to read stories to children. She had a life-long passion for music and theatre; a perfect outing for her was sharing a picnic lunch with husband Jack and attending a matinee performance at Flat Rock Playhouse.
Survivors include her husband, John (Jack) P. Mulvaney; daughter, Lisa Mulvaney Neal and husband Bobby of Lake Wylie, SC; sister, Betty Sluder Hall and husband George of Hendersonville, NC; brother, Robert Sluder and wife Charlotte of Asheville, NC, and sister-in-law, Phyllis Sluder. She was predeceased by brother, James Denver (JD) Sluder, Jr.
Visitation will be from 7:00 to 9:00 P.M. Thursday, January 3, 2008, at Groce Funeral Home, located at 1401 Patton Ave, Asheville, NC.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated by the Rev. Fr. Michael J. Polewczak at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, January 8, 2008, at Church of Jesus, Our Risen Savior Catholic Church, 2575 Reidville Road, Spartanburg.
Receiving will be held before mass at 10:00 a.m.
Private inurnment will be at Green Hills Cemetery, Asheville.
