RE: Cub Scout Pack 3 Posted Tuesday, August 19, 2014 08:54 PM John and Marty, This brings back memories for sure. We had a good group that translated into Troop 3 in later years. Scouting provided an opportunity to set goals and work with others to achieve them without any extra social overlay. It was just good fun...and you earned badges too!. Does anybody remember the Troop 3 signal towers set up in downtown Evanston? |

RE: Cub Scout Pack 3 Posted Wednesday, August 20, 2014 08:30 AM Sure do, Lee. (holdin back hard with "Sarah"!) totally fun thing to have right downtown, for me. i just wanted to climb on em. and help build them and take them down. that's where i was, i guess. greater than that, i remember our canoe trip in northern Wisconsin, with the Explorer post we created/continued after Boy Scouts. that trip was formative for me, as was all our camping in Boy Scouts (White Pines a favorite in my memory). my family did not camp, though both my parents grew up camping in their families. i have totally adored camping and living as if i were camping all my life including right now—i'm living in a tent, til it's too cold to, at the Ecovillage Training Center, a non-profit at The Farm, in Summertown Tennessee—my new home base, just moved from Seattle. it is very rockin for me to be again connected with you in this way Lee Graber. what blessing. marty campbell |

RE: Cub Scout Pack 3 Posted Friday, August 22, 2014 10:49 AM Marty, you have again brought back some good memories. I also enjoyed those times where we were camping. It was a good feeling to be self-sufficient, albeit relying on your fellow campers to be supportive in a community environment. I looked up "The Farm" online and it sounds like you are enjoying much the same experience today. |

RE: Cub Scout Pack 3 Posted Thursday, September 4, 2014 10:44 AM I was not in Pack 3 or Troop 3, but remeber my time in Explorer Post 3. Marty, you brought back memories about our Post canoe trip to Region 7 Canoe Base. I especially remember the portages on that trip -- not easy for us. Hope to see you guys at the reunion next weekend. |

RE: Cub Scout Pack 3 Posted Friday, September 5, 2014 09:42 PM I'm pretty sure I did not move on to Boy Scouts when I transferred to Orrington in 6th grade, but I sure remember having a great time in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts while at Dewey School. I think it was Pack 5, but don't quote me on it. My mother was a Den Mother for Cub Scouts. Perhaps I met some of the Orrington Boy Scouts before moving there and didn't remember it when I went to Boy Scout Camp as an 11 year old, and I think Scouts from all over Evanston went to the same camp at the same time - was it Wabaningo? Help me on that one. That was one scary experience for me. I had never been away from home on my own before going to canp, and as soon as I got there it was instant homesickness. I remember having to call my parents LONG DISTANCE COLLECT CALL, to ask them to come pick me up because I couldn't "hack it". So, my parents drove all the way over to Michigan to pick me up. Funny thing happened though between the time I called them and when they arrived. Namely, I had caught a 5 lb. carp and had staked it on a stringer on a point of land because I was so proud and wanted to show my mom and dad. Needless to say it was really bloated and stunk to high heaven by the time they arrived, but that didn't diminish my pride - it only increased it because the whole camp could smell it. I also had passed my swamped canoe and swimming tests. So, just like Allan Sherman's "Camp Granada," things were wonderful once again. So wonderful, in fact, that I had my parents sign me up for an add on additional two weeks of camp. I know, you could see that one coming, couldn't you? So, sorry for intruding on the Orrington School Cub Scout Forum, but I just felt like sharing my story on my Cub and Boy Scout experience, even if it was while I was at Dewey School.

RE: Cub Scout Pack 3 Posted Sunday, September 7, 2014 07:46 PM I remember those portages as well....heavy lifting. I also remember that we drank the water out of the lake and I don't think any of us got sick. I don't think we'd be able to do that today..... |
