Thoughts about Constitutional Failure Posted Friday, August 29, 2025 04:59 PM Here's a link to a piece I published three months ago in the Washington Monthly. It is a subject I have been brooding about for some time, as both a citizen and a scholar. It is a disturbing way to spend our senior years, when mostly one wants to stay in shape and (if you have them) see your grandchildren, but here we are, in one of the most distressing, disturbing, and almost inconceivable passages in American history. https://washingtonmonthly.com/2025/06/27/its-not-just-a-constitutional-crisis-in-the-trump-era-its-constitutional-failure/ In better news, a small group of us are going to have dinner on Fishermens Wharf on Sunday night. It began when I proposed go to a Cubs game when they were in town this week (to be swept!!) and evolved into Tim Groves inviting us all to go to dinner instead. Should be Tim, Jim Guetzkow, Bob Ward, Ruth Roberts, my wife Helen and me, and we hope Karl Morthole. |

RE: Thoughts about Constitutional Failure Posted Friday, August 29, 2025 08:02 PM Thanks for posting the link to the article you wrote in the Washington Monthly. It makes some critical points which have been ignored by legacy media, though echoes of it are stated in the alternative media being developed on YouTube and elsewhere. I took the liberty of copying the first few paragraphs to paste into my Facebook page. I'm comfortably ensconced in Toronto where links to news articles can no longer be posted. I have a number of American friends who will be interested to read your scholarly and factual views! |

RE: Thoughts about Constitutional Failure Posted Friday, August 29, 2025 11:05 PM Thanks so much for your comment, Karen. As I said, I have been thinking about this a lot and plan to do more writing on the subject, both politically and academically. On the latter side I will probably collaborate with a former student (lived in Hinsdale, went to the U. of C. Lab School) who wound up being the lead DoJ attorney supervising all of the Jan. 6 sentencing hearings. Here's another piece by a professional friend of mine, Norm Ornstein, that just got posted at Substack. Really hard-hitting but also constructive. https://contrarian.substack.com/p/our-guardrails-are-failing-us |
