
Sandra Smith , died April 24, 2014 after a valiant seven-month struggle with cancer.
She was born on July 24, 1947, in Fergus Falls, to Paul and Evelyn (Anderson) Koppe. She graduated from Fergus Falls High School in 1965, and received a BA in English and an MA in Library Science from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis.
On Aug. 31,1969, she married James R. Smith and moved with him to San Diego, Calif.
She started working in 1970, as a city librarian and later worked as a librarian for San Diego County. Most of her service in the County was as an analyst in a number of departments including criminal justice, the District Attorney’s Office and the Sheriffs Department. She retired from County Service in 2003.
She was an avid reader, traveler, quilter and knitter. In her retirement she enjoyed cruising with her family and knitting with members of the North County Knitters Guild.
She is survived by her husband, James R. Smith of San Diego; her daughter, Alison Miliama Smith (William Horejs); sisters, Paulette (David) Fleming of Arden Hills and Barbara Koppe of Fargo; her brother, David (Ann) Koppe of Minnetonka; nieces, Emily Koppe and Lindsay (Nicholas) Rasmussen; a nephew, Thomas Koppe; a great-niece, Ava Rasmussen; a brother-in-law, David (Ruth Ann) Smith; nephews, Brian and Matthew of Woodland Calif.; and her four beloved cats.
A celebration of Sandra’s life is planned at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 31, at Walled Garden at the San Diego Botanic Gardens in Encinitas.
The family requests a contribution could be made in her name to the Cancer Foundation.
