"Eight years have passed since U.S. Army Spc. Lauro De Leon III was laid to rest in Floresville. He was killed in action Sept. 8, 2004, while serving in Balad, Iraq, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
De Leon and his service have not been forgotten and the city of Floresville has continued to honor his memory. The city’s grand convention and community center was named for the soldier who gave his life “for God and country.” The building is now known as the Lauro G. De Leon III Floresville Event Center.
Floresville residents will always remember the youth who once donned the Cubs Athletics uniform and proudly represented the Floresville Independent School District, and the young man who died on foreign soil, defending his country and fighting for freedom."

What I loved the most about Lauro was that it was way too easy to make him laugh. He was a great person who was caring, trustworthy, and sweet. I can't say that we were best friends (more like close friends really), but he made me feel special when he called a few times between graduating from basic up to his deployment. I am forever grateful for his friendship and miss him dearly.
