Steve was certainly a good friend to me. We enjoyed music, literature, pocket billiards, and humor. I remember a poem he wrote for Carl's 12H English class: it was all about apples--so clever and original. Steve was one of Carl's best students. He visited us in New York just after our first son was born. He'd come through some rough times, and we were glad to see he was the survivor we knew he would be. I've thought of him often over the years, a gentle spirit that lifted our hearts.
