WHIPPLE, Martha (Smith), Ph.D - Of East Lansing. Born in Flint, Michigan July 29, 1950, Martha S. Whipple died February 4, 2009, at the age of 58. She was a resident of East Lansing for over 20 years and served her community as a psychologist. She sat on the Michigan State Board of Psychology, and trained at the Masters and Johnson Clinic in St. Louis, MO. She was also a professor at Michigan State University School of Medicine, and the University of Michigan, College of Nursing. She volunteered for hospice in her spare time. She was preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Lydia Smith. She is survived by her daughter, Shannon (Andrew) Matricaria; granddaughter, Elizabeth; 8 siblings, Kathleen (Merle) Birchmeier, JoAnn Smith, Frances Smith, Thomas (Beth) Smith, John (Sheila) Smith, Anna (Michael) Quarress, Rebecca (Curt) Cross, Jeffrey (Peggi) Smith; and 15 nieces and nephews. The Funeral Mass will be held Monday, February 9, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at St. John Student Parish, 327 MAC Blvd., East Lansing, with the Rev. Jake Foglio officiating. The committal will take place at 2:00 p.m. in St. Robert's Catholic Cemetery, Flushing, Michigan. The family will receive friends Saturday, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. and Sunday, from 2:00-4:00 and 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, 1730 E. Grand River Ave., East Lansing, MI. The rosary will be at 7:30 p.m. Sunday evening at the funeral home. Contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Michigan Great Lakes Chapter, 310 N. Main St., Suite 100, Chelsea, Michigan, 48118 in memory of Martha.
