Jason came home from work on a Monday (6 June 2011), played with his two-year old daughter Abby, ate dinner, and sat on the couch with his wife Alexis. When they got up to go to bed he could not feel or move his legs. They called 911 and he spent the next day going through a series of tests, from which he was diagnosed with Stage 4 Melanoma. He had a large tumor on his back/spine and the cancer had spread to his lymph nodes, lungs, and probably the liver. Surgery was not an option; chemotherapy or radiation would not have had much effect, and would have impacted the quality of the life he had left. The doctors sent him home, put up a hospital bed in his living room, and called Hospice. They gave him only weeks to live. I had the chance to fly out to Denver the following week to visit him. His parents and brother were staying with him and his family. It was an emotional three-day visit, but I will cherish those days for the rest of my life. Jason died on 4 July 2011, less than one month after the diagnosis.

John - Thank you for the personal perspective. I was very sad when I heard the news. Even though I wasn't a close friend to Jason, he was always very kind, funny and fun to hang out with when I had the opportunity. He truly was one of the "good guys".

My prayers are with his wife and child.
