Michael Hugh Flaherty, 59, of Fort Dodge, passed away on Monday, September 12, 2011, at the Paula J. Baber Hospice Home with his family by his side.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 16th, at 10:00 am in the Chapel of the Laufersweiler-Sievers Funeral Home and 10:30 am at Corpus Christi Church with Msgr. Kevin McCoy officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial. Burial will be in Corpus Christi Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Thursday with a vigil at 7:00 pm, all at the funeral home.
Mike is survived by his wife of 33 years, Diane Flaherty; his son, Scott (Adam Foss) Flaherty of Minneapolis, MN; his daughter, Kristen (Matthew) Van Vleet of Hudson, WI; his mother, Iva Flaherty of Fort Dodge; sisters, Kathleen (Craig) Donnelly of Hampton, IA; Margaret (Dave) Pfannes of Mason City, IA; Linda (Darrin) Biggs of Chandler, AZ; brother, Kevin (Vicki) Flaherty of San Diego, CA; mother-in-law, Eunice Lea of Decorah, IA; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Lea, Linda Lea, Theresa David (Frank), La Vonne (Randy) Peterson, Donna (David) Faber; brothers-in-law, Gilbert Lea, Joe (Sheryl) Lea, Tony (Mary) Lea, numerous nieces and nephews, and his miniature schnauzer “Link”.
He was preceded in death by his father Hugh C. Flaherty and father-in-law Ambrose Lea.
Michael Hugh Flaherty was born in Fort Dodge on November 25, 1951 to Hugh and Iva (Chapman) Flaherty. As a lifelong resident of Fort Dodge, Mike attended Corpus Christi Grade School, graduated from St. Edmond High School in 1970, and The University of Iowa in 1974. In 1978, he was united in marriage to Diane Lea in Waterville, Iowa. The couple made their home in Fort Dodge. Mike owned and operated MHF Consulting. He was an avid runner, bicyclist, and car enthusiast. Mike was a member of the Dodger Cyclist Biking Group, completed a marathon, and was a veteran rider of RAGBRAI, TOMRV (Tour of the Mississippi River Valley), and the BRR Ride. He was a life-long member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church (now Holy Trinity Parish). Mike also served on the parish council as a member of the buildings and grounds committee.
