Robert E. McCoy, 49, a music professor who had taught at the University of Maryland since 1985 and had performed internationally as a pianist and accompanist, died Oct. 16 at his College Park home.
Determination of the cause of death awaits results of an autopsy by the Maryland medical examiner's office.
Dr. McCoy coordinated the university's accompanist and vocal coaching degree programs. He was also musical director of the Maryland Opera Studio and a piano accompanist and assistant director with the Washington Opera. He made recordings with singers and played with the University of Maryland Piano Trio and for the Rose Ponselle International Vocal Competition and National Symphony young soloists competition. He performed in China and across the United States and Europe.
Dr. McCoy was a graduate of the University of Iowa, where he received a master's degree in music. He received a doctorate in music from the University of Southern California and studied music in Paris on a Fulbright scholarship.
He was a church organist and choir director in his native Fort Dodge, Iowa, from the age of 10 until he was 20. He taught at the American College in Paris and at the University of Michigan.
His honors included two Maryland Creative and Performance Arts Awards and the Maryland Governor's Salute to Excellence in the Arts award. He was a director of the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival.
Survivors include his parents, Marvin McCoy and Delores McCoy, both of Fort Dodge; and two sisters
