St. Edmond senior dies in cycle-car collision
A 17-year-old youth who would have graduated from St. Edmond High School Friday died Monday evening when his motorcycle was hit by a car in south Fort Dodge.
Paul Michael Munn, son of Mrs. and Mrs. John J. Munn, 720 S. 21st St., was dead of head injuries on arrival at Mercy Hospital following the 7:20 p.m. accident at Eigth Avenue South and Eighteen Street.
Munn is the sixth person to die in a traffic accident in the city this year. His death boosts the 1970 Webster County traffic deaths toll to nine.
Fort Dodge Police said Munn's motorcycle collided with a southbound car driven by James Patrick Morrow, 31, 2023 8th Ave. N. Reports indicate Morrow stopped at a stop sign athe intersection and then pulled into the intersection, striking the eastbound motorcyle with the front right fender of his auto.
Officials said Munn received fatal head injuries when thrown 32 feet by the impact of the collision. His cycle skidded 34 feet across the intersection on its side after the crash.
Police said an attempt by Dr. Charles Dagle, who lives near the intersection, to revive the youth failed. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.
Investigating officers charged Morrow, who said he did not see the motorcycle, with failure to yield at a stop intersection.
Services for Paul are pending at the Laufersweiler Funeral Home, awaiting word of the arrival time of a brother serving with the U.S.Navy.
Rosary services will be held in the funeral home at 8 o'clock Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. Friends may call there after 7 p.m. Tuesday.
The 1970 graduating class of St. Edmond High School will meet at the funeral home at 7:30 p.m. for a rosary service.
Surviving in addition to the parents are two brothers: Don Munn, Airman Third Class, stationed at the Naval Air Station, Miramar, Calif.: and Apprentice Seaman John Munn, stationed on the aircraft carrier Joh. F. Kennedy; grandparents, Mrs. Anna Harrington, and Ray L. Munn, both in Fort Dodge.
Born in Fort Dodge, Paul attended Sacred Heart grade school and was a member of the 1970 graduating class of St. Edmond High School. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church; the St. Edmond Key Club; an active member of St. Edmond football team and a member of the junior varsity wrestling team of the school.
