Anyone who knows!

Each time I returned to the High School I would check out the trophy case. On the last visit all the trophys from our time and before were missing. I asked why? the answer I got was they needed the space and most of the students listed on the trophys were dead. Then a classmate told me they were sold for repurposing.Needless to say I was tapped off.

this is the reason why I cannot support the current effort!

Just saying,

Bill

Trophy Case Visit by Bill Orr experience: not good! I do not have a trophy, but, for those who have their name on a trophy I am feeling bad. Trophy's only purpose is to honor the people ewho arned them and history should be respected.

I was extremely disappointed to read Bill Orr's revelation regarding the high school's handling of trophies earned by our class and those before.  While I recognize that a finite amount of display space would suggest a crowding of trophies, it seems that additional space could be easily provided. This, I feel, is particulary true since our class was the first Junior class in the current high school. What especially annoys me is the cavalier abandonment of historic memorabilia from a class whose status is apparently meaningless to the school unless it relates to a current contribution to the school's courtyard project. While I didn't have an affected trophy, I was considering making a personal donation to the courtyard project . . . but not now!

Give FMHS a break Bill O., Jack S., and Bill P. after all 60 years have passed and how many times have any of you or any of us frankly been to FMHS to check out if the trophies that we all won in l960-61 are still there.  I can't fathom the amount of room that 60 years of trophies would take up but the fact that they are repurposing the trophies gives me comfort. The kids going to FMHS now and in the future years had nothing to do with removing the old tarnished trophies. We all enjoyed our Courtyard tremendously and I love the idea of being able to bring back the Courtyard to FMHS. Please try to rethink your position. So far I have received $2,750 from the Class of 1961 toward the new Courtyard. A great big thank you to all who have donated and are yet to donate. It will be really special to have the Class of 1961 on the placque that will be positioned in the Courtyard when it is completed. We will get a chance to see it completed at our 60th Class Reunion. A local nursery is donating trees, a local hardware store is donating all the new benches and some of the concrete and contracting work is being donated. Anyway I'm so grateful for the Classmates that are helping out with this very special project for FMHS I thank you one and all.

Hi Sharon, FMHS is fine. Happy they are getting a new courtyard.

The trophy situation could have been handled better imo. I probably visited the trophy case as often as I used the courtyard. Zero. But now that I am a moldy old curmudgeonly senior citizen with way too much time on my hands it is easy for me to get fired up about a lot of things that would have only attracted passing interest 20 years ago.

Thus my sudden interest in FMHS trophies. My reaction was to the apparent indifference by somebody at FMHS to those FMHS students who received a trophy because they worked so hard to achieve something that was celebrated in its day. Now, they are just old, dead, forgotten. So, who cares? Sorta sad. Ashes to ashes. dust to dust.

I am sure FMHS is not the first or last to do something like this. Clean out the old. Make way for the new. Even the ancient Romans did this. They repurposed a lot of stuff, like statues, archways, buildings. Bits of history that is now lost.

I take solace in the fact that my immortality is secured by my assorted body part implants with serial numbers, searchable no doubt, probably stored on some digital archive.

Sooner or later we are all repurposed. For now, life is too short. Be well. Be happy.

Sharon, I have an idea.

Can we buy a plastic brick or something we can place in the FHMS Courtyard. If so, I will imbed in that brick a scannable RFID location chip and small USB memory stick. In the memory stick will be an internet link to a perpetually endowed website where all names, photos, and reports of individual achievements of FMHS'ers will be maintained. A virtual trophy case. It will be every graduating class' responsibility to upload its constribution. Nobody can repurpose it.

Cost should be small.

Jack:  I like your idea! Is it feasible? If so I will talk to the principal! I look to you for your expertise!

Hi Sharon, here are two services we can look at. There are probably more. A lot of schools running out of space.

To keep it low cost and simple it could be as easy as creating a website, or, it could be a kiosk located in a common area of the school.

Marcia Conley (Davis)

Hi, to all my Class of '61 Classmates

I underwent emergency back surgery on March 29 and was discharged from the hospital on April 15.  I have many vists with physical theraphy to regain the ability to walk again.  I am making small prgress and gaining stength every day.  God willing, I still plan on attending the Reunion in September and look forward to seeing everyone again.  My tax practice has continued with the wonderful staff I have including my oldest son, Brent, at the helm.  As I gain strength, I am working on a limited basis from my home.  Even with this setback. I have no plans of retirement.  Maybe, slowing down a little.  Don't delay doing what you want today because tomorrow can change in a blink of an eye!  It did for me!

Marcia,

So sorry to hear of your back problem. But you are a trouper and glad you are on the road to recovery. And I'm happy you have your son with you during this time. You are in my prayers & hope to see you in Sept.

Marcia, You are in my prayers for a speedy recovery!  It sounds like it will take awhile but just do a little bit more each day and before you know it- you will be walking again!

Sandra Buckley (Matthews)

Marcia,  We are sorry to hear about your emergency back surgery.  I can sympathize totally because I had 6 fusions in my lumbar vertebrae back in 2014. It is not a easy recovery. It's a day at a time process but you can do it!  Praying for your total recovery.

Sharon,  You are a real trouper to find a caterer for the Friday night Reunion Dinner. The price increase is fine with us. Are we allowed to bring and consume our own wine or alcohol with this meal still at the Kingsley?    Now let's hope for decent dry weather for the parade and Rodeo and concert.  We will be mailing you our check in July and state our Saturday lunch choice and also the new price for the total "weekend package".
See you soon,  The Matthews z

Great picture!  Wish I could be there sometime to join you.  Looking forward to the Reunion.  Physical theraphy is slow going but my physical  therapist and doctor keep reminding me I need to have more patience!  Still walking with the aid of a walker but fully intend on attending the Reunion without assistance.

This a little humor for your weekend enjoyment!

Report on RV first trip from hell.

Knew we were in for it when the dealership forgot we were scheduled to pick up the camper on a certain date and time. It took them 4 hrs to hook up the camper and see us on our way.

On the trip to Palmer's Gulch the RV towed well until we hit the mountains. we were then in trouble for the trailer brakes locked up repeadly. the car bucked and we were having second thoughts about the trip.  finally on arriving we received help on backing up into our slot. Jean filled the potable water tank just as we were instructed but it was actually he black water tank. We were up the creek without a paddle. that nite it was colder than hell and we couldn't get the heater to work. Also,  the hot water tank didn't work.

We sluffed thru for a couple of days until our son and his family arrived. We hit the dump station and from then on could use the toilet. A major achievement. Bill quickly determined that the heating system wasn't the correct one and that the hot water system was broke. He invited over to his Pusher RV for drinks and dinner. Anyway, he adjusted the brake system and has taken the RV to his storage garage for repairs.

Our next trip will be to Duluth, MN and hopefully everything will work as intended. The ultimate goal is to travel to Cannon Beach,Oregon for the month of September.

If you ever get to Palmer's Gulch try the fudge. It is fantastic and just like Mackinaw Island it is served next to the horse stables.

Enough said!

Your friend and classmate,

Bill
