"Ergänzen sie die folgenden fragen."  Every class period for two years, straight from the textbooks:  "Answer the following questions."

Gee, how things change! In Mr. Birkman's German class, I am certain the phrase in the text was "Antworten sie die folgenden Fragen." Anybody still have those old texts? Wasn't one entitled Auf den Dorf, and the other In der (?) Stadt?

It might have been so, except the memory of "Ergänzen" with the umlaut over the "a" and the verbal repetition by Pastor Marschke are both pretty clear.  The translation would be "Complete the following questions" rather than "Antworten" or "Beantworten" - answer.  I have no memory of the texts used.  I do recall the distraction created when, after the lunch periods were staggered so that some students had 4th (?) period for lunch and some the following period, Suzi Meierding (CLHS '62), who sat next to me in the rear of the room, would try to mouth words through the glass of the closed door to the boys in the hall who were eyeing her.
