Steve Sprunger

Steve at Prom 1961.  Uploaded by Lee Clark 04-13-20 from a photo supplied by Don Luepke taken by Jan Schoenefeld ('63) Buuck's father.  Steve and I met at Kindergarten registration and from then through grade 3 rode the city bus togther to Bethlehem school.  We were often at one another's homes back then - we lived perhaps 4 blocks apart.  He was interning (4th year of 5) from Concordia University Chicago (River Forest) as a teacher in a Lutheran school in Milwaukee 1964-65 when struck by cancer.  He returned home early in 1965 and died in May.  I was a pall bearer for his funeral.  As a child Steve had always wanted to learn to play piano, but that was impossible in his family situation.  While at River Forest he was able to take lessons and became an accomplished organist by his internship year.  I also recall seeing him, perhaps his sophomore River Forest year, shirtless, well darkened by makeup, playing the part of Jerome, Emile De Becque's mixed race son, in a production of the musical "South Pacific."  Thanks be to God for the person he was among us for the time the Lord allotted.

Steve was a soft spoken wonderful classmate at Bethlehem and Concordia.  He always had an infectious smile and a warm greeting.  He may have been my first friend to die, but he died in the Lord which is a wonderful consolation. He is missed.   Tom Springer

Thanks Lee, for posting this.  Steve and I "doubled" for that prom event.  Steve was indeed a gentle giant in his relationship with people.  We were gifted to have him a part of our lives.

There are many "Quiet Spirits" that were in our class. So many I was not close to but their presence was powerful. Steve was an unassuming boy but a true "Child of God". We are better to have known him.
