Westfield- Daniel Martin Fitzgerald, 70, of Susan Drive passed away Friday at Mercy Medical Center in Springfield. He was born in Springfield on July 2nd, 1945 to the late Patrick and Mary (Martin) Fitzgerald. He grew up in Springfield and graduated from Classical High School where he starred on the Varsity Basketball team. He later moved to West Springfield where he lived most of his life before settling in Westfield 28 yrs. ago. Dan served as a Massachusetts State Trooper for 32 years. He worked in Troop E for most of his career and retired in 2004. He served his country honorably in the Vietnam War as a U.S. Army Combat Veteran in the Americal Division. He received his B.A. in History and his Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice both from A.I.C. He was an avid N.Y. Giants and Boston Red Sox fan, in fact he attended the opening day of the Red Sox 28 times. He visited Ireland 29 times with family and friends over the years and he got a chance to connect with his family still there. He also enjoyed his winters in Cocoa Beach, Florida. He was the beloved husband of Judith A. (Cox) Fitzgerald, loving father of Rose Mary Fitzgerald Sicard and her husband James of Westfield and Daniel P. Fitzgerald of Longmeadow, caring brother of Maureen Pratte of Agawam, John Fitzgerald of West Springfield, and Eileen Burns and her husband Robert of Enfield, and devoted grandfather of Kaitlin, Jack, and Nicholas Sicard. He also leaves several cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was previously married to Rose Marie (Dimino) Fitzgerald of West Springfield. The calling hours are Monday 4-7 PM at the TOOMEY-O’BRIEN FUNERAL HOME, 1043 Westfield Street, West Spfld. There will be a Funeral Mass Tuesday at 11:30 AM at St. Thomas the Apostle Church followed by a Committal Service at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam.
