On February 3rd two thousand and nineteen Heaven welcomed a truly wonderful and amazing woman, Eileen Patricia Betts. This is not a day of sadness, but a celebration of her life. It is a day to remember the amazing life that she led, and the lives that were touched by her along the way.
Eileen grew up in Franklin Square, on Long Island, New York and pursued her lifelong passion of becoming a nurse. Feeling the call of patriotism, and loving the way nurses looked in uniform, she joined the United States Air Force as a flight nurse. She enjoyed being stationed around the Pacific and flying routinely in and out of Vietnam, Japan, Hawaii, and many other places before returning to the states. While stationed in Hawaii she met the love of her life Darrell. This was the beginning a journey and friendship that would span fifty years.
Seven years after getting married, Darrell and Eileen welcomed two sons to the world: Jared and Andrew. As a close and loving family, they continued the love of travelling and exploring the world. It became a passion they all enjoyed. An avid reader and historical buff, Eileen was an enthusiast of murder mysteries, books of historical fiction, and romance novels. Many a days and nights were spent in endless debate about upcoming book series plots, twists and turns. Games and learning played a major role in the cohesion of the family. Countless hours were spent sitting around a table and enjoying the competition and closeness it brought. Eileen’s life was always rounded out by her love of animals and furry additions to the family.
Eileen’s life was enriched by the inclusion of her relatives whom loved to gather for family holidays to reminisce and catch up over food and games. Nursing stories were a common topic, since most of her family followed her in the profession. This always provided enormous amounts of material for medical jokes and humor. Eileen always cherished the love and support of her family: From her younger sister Virginia as well as her brother-in-law Dean and sister-in-law Janice. The family grew steadily to include new in-law spouses Bob and Bonnie, and later her favorite nephew Alex followed by her favorite niece Kameron. As the years passed, the family spread out to encompass ever greater regions of the world, and the connection and importance of family was always at the foremost of Eileen’s thoughts. Her family grew as new members were added to the joy of the family as Andrew married Kristen and later Jared married Cindy. A final gift was bestowed upon Eileen as she became a grandmother in January of 2019 to Connor. It was one of the happiest moments in her life.
We give thanks that our lives were truly blessed by the company and companionship of such an amazing woman, nurse, wife, mother, aunt, mother-in-law, grandma and always a friend! In loving memory; Eileen will be missed, remembered and celebrated!
