After graduation from FHS, Stanley attended Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos. After several years of working full-time, he graduated from SWTSU in December, 1970. In June of 1965, he married Janet Ernst. They had one son, Jason Scott Barnes, in December, 1970. They divorced in 1972.

Stanley enjoyed architectural and interior design and spent the majority of his adult life working in that field in Austin, New Orleans, and Hawaii. He was a long-time member of the American Society of Interior Designers.

He passed away on September 1, 2003, in Hawaii. He was survived by his son, Jason, daughter-in-law, Robin, and three grandsons; two sisters and one brother.
