Mark was probably my oldest friend. We met at age three when I lived next door to his grandmother; and he and I would stand at the fence between our back yards and talk. I hadn't seen him since high school and, as fate would have it, we met again the year he passed away. Mark was a patient in the rehab department at Mary Black Hospital in Spartanburg where my daughter Amy was the recreation therapist. During conversation Amy discovered Mark was from Gaffney and asked if he knew her mother which led to my visit to see him there. It was so nice to catch up with my old friend. We shared "war stories" of our battles with cancer and talked about our children and grandchildren. Mark was one of the smartest, kindest and most gentle guys I have known. Although we didn't know it at the time I am glad we had a chance to say good-bye.
