Beer in the barracks Posted Sunday, June 24, 2012 10:31 AM Thankfully, we were never caught at this but at the time, I really didn’t care. .My first year, 1962, as a junior, I was assigned to “A” Company. In FL, we were housed on the top floor of the new barracks building, located in the “circle” in Hollywood. Jon Naef was a senior and one of my suite-mates while we were there. Jon had perfected the fine art of smuggling beer in to our rooms and taught me this “talent”. It was quite simple really. Every Saturday, we’d take our laundry to town. No one ever asked us why, since the school provided laundry service. Those white laundry bags were the perfect size for hiding a case of beer. As many guys did, we made phony ID’s from the covers of those military science manuals they gave us, the one’s that had the Dept. of the Army seal on them. These ID’s were obviously made on a typewriter and looked phony but they were enough to convince a willing store clerk that we were in the service and 21 yrs old…the key word being “willing”. So, we’d go to town, drop off our laundry at a wash and fold place in the morning and pick it up after lunch. We never took full bags, so there was plenty of room for the real purpose of our trip. We’d each put a case of beer in our bag and use our clean laundry to pad around it, to hide the shape of the beer carton. We’d nervously carry it in, check in at the guard house and go straight to our room. Our company commander knew what we were doing but a few beers kept him quiet. We did this just about every weekend while we were in FL. We were afraid to throw the empties in the trash, so, since we were on the top floor of the building, we’d just pitch the empties up on to the roof at night…actually a pretty dumb idea, but it worked. One day while we were in formation on the parade deck behind the new building, a gust of wind developed in to a small whirlwind and lifted a few of our “empties” off the roof and dropped them on the concrete, right in front of the formation. Needless to say, our butts were sucking wind. I’m sure someone did some checking but we never heard anything from it. My 2nd year and last year at RMA, I was in “F” Company, which was housed in the old buildings, across from the circle, while we were in FL. Probably, because I didn’t have Jon’s leadership, I never smuggled in any beer in FL that year. |
