Bill Sheppard lived two doors from me during the period 1955-58. Bill always played the role of the bad boy and always tried to pass himself off as some kind of tough guy. In actuality he was very quiet, thoughtful, shy, intelligent and a good friend. I never learned why he wanted people to have such a distorted image of him. He always hated his middle name...Avis...and was very protective of the way his last name was spelled...Sheppard, not Shepherd. I'm sorry to learn that he has died. I never saw him after I left Gallup and completely lost track of him.
Like Robert, I remember Bill as a guy who liked to project a tough-guy image, but he was very smart, more sensitive than he wanted you to know, and a good person. I got the impression that growing up wasn't easy for him; in the time I spent with him, I grew to like Bill a lot. I'm so sorry to learn that he passed away before his time
