Elizabeth “Libby” Ann Daniel Dickinson, a remarkable individual, passed away suddenly but peacefully on November 21st, 2023 in Alexandria, VA. Her elegant penmanship, preference for cursive writing, and engaging conversations with friends and strangers alike made her truly unforgettable.

Libby’s journey took her to various places, including Milford, Rochester Hills, Boyne City, Bloomfield Hills, Granada Hills, McLean, Kokomo, and Sanibel, FL. She dedicated herself to civic service, volunteering for organizations such as Meadowbrook Hall, Hospice of Michigan, First Presbyterian Church of Birmingham, Birmingham Community House, Duke University Board of Visitors, Sanibel Big Arts, and Chapel by the Sea.

Libby’s love story with her college sweetheart, Gary W. Dickinson '60, began at Duke University. They married in the Duke Chapel on February 6, 1961, and together, they embarked on an incredible life journey. They had two children, Debbi Kelly (John) and Jeff (who passed away in 2010). Later, they were blessed with two grandchildren, Jack (19) and Julia Kelly (16). Gary passed away in 2000.

2006, Libby met Dale S. Hanson, and they were married in Minnesota. Dale passed away in 2013. Libby’s legacy lives on through her family, friends, and the impact she made on the communities she touched.

The first of several services to celebrate Libby’s life will be held on Friday, December 22, 2023, at 10 am at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Alexandria, VA. Additional services will take place in Sanibel Island, FL, and Birmingham, MI at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW) on Sanibel Island1.

May the memory of Elizabeth Daniel Dickinson continue to inspire and uplift those who knew her. 🌹

her life private.  I knew her very well from third grade on up to attending Duke University.  I remember when many of us took dancing lessons at Durham School of Dance, that whenever a waltz came up, I chose Libby as my dance partner.  She was extremely talented in many ways, especially in music.  I marveled at her piano and voice.  She was inately beautiful.  A highly intelligent person who graduated from Duke with honors.
