Delores Jenkins Thornton passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Saturday, August 2, 2014. She was born in Gastonia, NC on March 5, 1938, and was the daughter of the late Sybil Propst and Robert Bain Jenkins.

Delores, known as Dee, graduated from Ashley High School and Sacred Heart College. A lifelong member of First United Methodist Church, Dee and her dear friend, Kay Brown, operated KayDee's at the Cove gift shop at Covenant Village for thirteen years. Dee was active in the Jr. League, Magnolia Garden Club, Et Amicorum Book Club and the Gastonia Debutante Club. Dee was a wonderful cook and loved entertaining family and friends.

In addition to her parents, Dee was preceded in death by her husband of fifty years, McAlpin Reavis Thornton, Sr.

Survivors include her three children, McAlpin Reavis Thornton, Jr. of Gastonia, Shuford Thornton Cornette (Clint) of Wilmington, NC, and Robert Neal Thornton (Katherine) of Raleigh, NC; grandchildren, Bain Cornette, Thornton Cornette, Ellen Graham Cornette, Preston Cornette, Finnegan Thornton and Joe Linthicum; brother, R.B. Jenkins (Carol); sister, Ann Riggs; aunt, Helen Johnson (George).

Family and friends of Dee Thornton are invited to attend her memorial service beginning at 11:00 AM Tuesday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Christy officiating. The family will receive friends in the Family Life Center immediately following the service. A private committal will take place at Gaston Memorial Park.
