HICKORY, Tommy Joe Gilliam Sr., 76, of Hickory passed away Sunday, July 17, 2016, at Frye Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 23, 1939, in Pickens, S.C., he was the son of the late Theo and Lois Owens Gilliam. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Jackie Owens Gilliam. Mr. Gilliam is survived by his wife, Aletha Ballenger Gilliam; a daughter, Donna Sigmon of Maiden; a son, Tommy Joe Gilliam Jr. and wife, Kelly of Boone; two brothers, Don Gilliam and Scott Gilliam of Gastonia; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, July 20, in the VA National Cemetery in Salisbury, with the Rev. Don Ingle officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the United States Air Force. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, July 19, at Bass-Smith Funeral Home.
