June 1, 1940 - January 7, 2023
Lexington, Kentucky - It is with a heavy heart and unbearable sadness that I, Donna L. Potter announce the passing of my beloved husband of 31 years, Lanny Keith Heavener, 82.
After a long illness he was rushed to the emergency room at Baptist Health Hospital on December 28, 2022. He passed of natural causes on January 7, 2023 after being cared for in I.C.U. and hospice. I would like to thank the medical staff of the I.C.U. for their kind attentive care they gave us. Lanny's wishes were to be cremated and he has been. At his Request there will be a celebration of life memorial at our home later. All pertinent information will be posted in this newspaper and social media once the details have been confirmed.
Lanny was born on June 1, 1940 in Gastonia, North Carolina to the late William Glenn and Gladys Irene Brown Heavener. Additionally, he was preceded in death by two brothers Max Blair and Jackie C. Heavener, one sister-in-law Betty, and one granddaughter. Lanny graduated from Gaston County High School. He loved to tell stories about his family and many buddies he grew up with. Lanny was fun-loving, had a great sense of humor, loved to cook and eat great food, he loved life and traveling to warm sunny places. But mostly he loved his Kentucky Wildcat sports. Donna and Lanny had each lived in Lexington many years prior to meeting in 1989 and married July 3, 1992.
Lanny had many friends from all walks of life. He never met a stranger. Often strangers approached him to tell him what a gorgeous head of white hair he had. Of course he loved it!
Once Donna discovered how talented Lanny was in the kitchen cooking, it was only natural for him to become her partner in her company Catering By Donna. They made a great team! One of our favorite catering stories was of Lanny chargrilling almost 1,000 quail on site at the event. Each one was cooked perfectly!
In addition to his wife, Donna Potter, he is survived by four beautiful daughters Lynda Ferguson Ricci Murdock (Mark), Kelly Lanise Heavener, Keri Elizabeth Heavener, and Kristi Melissa Heavener, along with their mother Elizabeth Josephine Baker Heavener. He is also survived by 6 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and his precious dog, Handsome Hank. Lanny loved living in Kentucky and consequently was very proud to have been commissioned Honorable Lanny Heavener, a Kentucky Colonel in 2001.
Donations to the Lexington Humane Society would be appreciated.
Care Cremation & Funeral Service is honored to be entrusted with final care.
