Obituary

Lawson Stowe Warren Jr. (Larry), of Nashville, TN passed away June 19, 2021, after a lengthy battle with coronary heart disease and myeloma. He was born in Gaston County, a Christmas Eve gift to his parents, the late Lawson and Lena Warren. Lawson was a 1972 graduate of Ashbrook High School, serving as Junior and Senior Class President. After graduation, Lawson moved to Asheville where he attended UNC-A. There, he was instrumental in creating the first on-campus radio station at the University. After college, he worked for the State of North Carolina as a videographer, creating programs for the NC Department of Cultural Resources, focusing on historical sites, sounds and people of the State of North Carolina, including the prideful Cherokee Indian Nation. Lawson was President and Co-Owner of the Linear Group of Asheville, NC creating and producing Nashville Network’s “Fire on the Mountain” and the Radio Program “Liberty Flyer” featuring music, characters and sounds of WNC Mountains. In his later years, Lawson developed multiple projects to highlight the sights and sounds of Americana, particularly the American Native Indians. His lifelong passion was the concept of a living history museum at the famed Little Big Horn Battlefield in Montana called “Little Bighorn - An American Journey,” chronicling the daily lives of the Indians and Soldiers of the infamous Battle of the Little Bighorn. This project is ongoing. Survivors of Lawson include, David Warren and wife, Jo; Julia Rush and husband, Robert; ex-wife and friend, Debra Gentry; and longtime friend, Phyllis Lewis. Lawson’s ashes will be privately scattered beside the Little Bighorn National Cemetery in Montana. In keeping with the love for his Native brothers, when someone passes away, many Native people say that they do not die, but instead “walk on,” implying a continuation of a journey rather than an endpoint on a linear path. With these words, we say, “Walk on, brother.”
