GASTONIA - Susan York Hinkle, born Dec. 3, 1953, in Gastonia, to the late Charles Edward York and Anne Sparrow Little, passed away on May 27, 2014, at Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center.

She was a 1972 graduate of Ashbrook High School in Gastonia, NC and a 1976 graduate of Salem Col-lege.  

Following graduation, Susan worked for Hinkle's Incorporated as an interior designer where she met her husband of 36 years.  

She was presented at the 1973 Gastonia Debutante Ball. She was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church where she was a member of Women's Circle # 6, the Altar Guild, and volunteer at Glad Tidings Gift Shop. Susan was also a member of Winston-Salem Junior League, Salem College Alumnae Association and a past volunteer at Forsyth Medical Center.
Among Susan's greatest pleasures were her two "girls," devoted husband, family and many loving friends. She treasured her beloved dogs, creating her warm home and beautiful garden, reading and book collecting, arranging flowers for friends, family vacations to Wrightsville Beach and playing bridge with the "Diamonds in the Ruff". Most of all, Susan enjoyed her full life with the ability to put a humor-ous spin on any life situation. She knew no strangers.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. William R. Sparrow of Gastonia, her fa-ther-in-law, Talmadge G. Hinkle of Winston-Salem, and her stepfather, Robert E. Little, III of Wadesboro.  

Susan is survived by her husband, Talmadge Gray Hinkle, Jr., and two daughters, Anna Gray Schien and husband, Will of Raleigh, and Mary Charlotte Hinkle of Winston-Salem. She is also survived by her sister, Clarissa York Bryant and husband, Tommy of Gastonia; mother-in-law, Ann Hinkle King and hus-band, Bob of Winston-Salem; sisters-in-law, Melissa Hinkle and Debbie Thompson and husband, Ran-dall; a niece, Baity Bryant; nephews, York Bryant and wife, Martine, and Austin Thompson. Susan also had two great nieces, Ellie and Annabelle Shine and a great-nephew, Ty Bryant.

A memorial service to celebrate Susan's life will be held 11 a.m. Friday, May 30, 2014 at Centenary United Methodist Church, 658 West Fifth St., Winston-Salem, NC with Dr. Mark Ralls officiating.  

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Forsyth Medical Center Foundation, Derrick L. Da-vis, Jr. Cancer Center, 3333 Silas Creek Parkway, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
